Additional Details

scarce and useful directory of thirty of philadelphia's most important people of color, signed by the compiler beneath his photograph on page 154. Includes several poems by White who was the author of a remarkably radical collection of poems, "The Plea of the Negro Soldier." (Philadelphia, 1908). A veteran of the Spanish American War, White was studying law when this book was published. One of White's stronger poems is included here, "Resolutions of a Race" begins:
'Whereas we're murdered, lynched and mobbed/ Deprived of right to vote and robbed/ Jim-crowed and ostracized and spurned/ And even skinned alive and burned/ Here in our native land and home/ With life unsafe, where'er we roam/ And whereas we have tried in vain/For forty years our rights to gain. . .
